Pruning That Makes a Tree Safer
Tree trimming and pruning removes selected branches to lower risk, clear a roof or driveway, and keep a tree healthy, without taking the tree down. Around Wilmington, a lot of our pruning is about wind: getting dead limbs out before hurricane season, reducing long heavy limbs over a house, and clearing branches back from roofs and service lines. Done well, pruning can let a tree you love stay. Done badly, with topping or stripping out the inside of the crown, it can create the decay and weak regrowth that make a tree more likely to fail.
Pruning to the standard
The tree care industry follows ANSI A300, the American National Standard for tree care, which calls for cuts at the branch collar instead of flush cuts or stubs, removing no more of the living crown than the goal requires, and not topping trees. NC State Extension warns that severely pruned trees are more likely to decay and fail in strong winds. In practice, that means we would rather make a smaller number of well-placed cuts, such as removing a dead limb, shortening a long limb back to a healthy side branch, or taking out a crossing branch, than strip a tree.
Hurricane prep pruning
The goal before storm season is to take off the parts of a tree most likely to break. Dead and broken limbs come out first. Long, heavy limbs extending over a roof can be shortened to reduce leverage. Trees with two competing trunks can be pruned to favor one. For pines, which shed limbs readily, removing dead branches and checking the top is often enough. NC State Extension ranks live oaks among the most wind-resistant trees, so a well-pruned live oak is usually worth keeping. Laurel and water oaks get a closer look for decay at the same time, since pruning won't fix a rotten trunk.
Live oaks and protected trees
Large live oaks are among Wilmington's most valued trees, and the city treats big native trees like them as specimen trees. Pruning a tree isn't the same as removing it, but heavy cutting that harms a protected tree can cause problems, and in the city's local historic districts tree work needs particular care. Street trees in the right-of-way belong to the city, which maintains more than 30,000 of them, so trimming a city tree needs the city's approval. On private live oaks, we prune lightly and on purpose: deadwood, clearance over roofs and driveways, and weight reduction on long limbs.
Typical Jobs
The pruning jobs we do most around Wilmington.
Deadwood removal
Dead and broken limbs taken out of the crown before they fall on their own.
Roof and structure clearance
Branches cut back from roofs, gutters, siding and chimneys, to proper pruning cuts.
Hurricane prep and weight reduction
Long, heavy limbs shortened to side branches to lower the chance of breakage in high winds.
Crown raising
Low limbs removed over driveways, sidewalks and lawns for clearance.
Live oak pruning
Light, selective work on live oaks: deadwood, clearance and end-weight reduction.
Palm and crape myrtle trimming
Dead fronds and seed stalks off sabal palms, and proper crape myrtle pruning instead of topping.

How It Works
1. Talk about the goal
Roof clearance, storm prep, deadwood, light, or a mix. The goal decides which cuts are made.
2. Inspect the tree
We check for decay, cracks and weak unions, since pruning won't fix a tree that needs to come down.
3. Written scope
The quote describes what will be cut and why, and the price for each tree.
4. Prune and clean up
Cuts are made at branch collars or to side branches, brush is chipped and the yard is cleared.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning
No topping
We don't top trees or strip out their interiors; both lead to decay and weak regrowth.
Clear scope
You know before we start which limbs come off and why.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
When is the best time to prune trees in Wilmington?
Late winter, before spring growth, is a good time for most structural pruning, and it lets you see the branch structure of deciduous trees. Deadwood and clearance work can be done any time. For storm prep, aim to finish before August, when the most active part of hurricane season begins.
Can you trim my live oak without hurting it?
Yes, with light, selective cuts: deadwood, clearance and shortening long limbs back to side branches. Live oaks handle that well. What harms them is heavy cutting, topping and large wounds from removing big limbs flush to the trunk.
Can I trim branches from the city tree in front of my house?
Trees in the public right-of-way belong to the City of Wilmington, and work on them needs the city's approval. Contact the city about a street tree that needs pruning, rather than hiring anyone to cut it.
Should I have my crape myrtles cut back every year?
No. Cutting crape myrtles back to the same stubs each winter, often called crape murder, creates knobs and weak sprouts. Removing crossing branches, suckers and seed heads keeps them healthy without topping.
Who trims trees near the power lines on my street?
Duke Energy manages vegetation around its primary lines and has a tree trimming request form; it says a vegetation professional follows up within 10 business days. The service line running to your house is the property owner's to keep clear, and Duke will disconnect it at no cost so a tree company can work near it.
