Island Trees, Two Counties
Tree Removal in Surf City covers a town that has grown fast and straddles a county line. Surf City sits on Topsail Island and lies in both Pender and Onslow counties, with the Pender portion part of the Wilmington metro and the Onslow portion part of Jacksonville's. Incorporated in 1949, it had 166 residents in 1970 and 3,867 in 2020, with the biggest jump coming between 2010 and 2020. All that new building means many owners are now living with whatever trees were left standing on their lots.
The bridge changed access
The old Topsail Island swing bridge, built in 1954, was replaced by a fixed-span bridge that opened in December 2018. It is about 3,800 feet long with 65 feet of vertical clearance, so boats no longer stop traffic, and it is wide enough to allow three lanes during hurricane evacuations. For tree work, that means trucks, chippers and, when needed, a crane can reach the island on a schedule instead of waiting for the bridge to swing closed.
Two counties, two sets of offices
Because the town spans the county line, county services differ depending on where your lot falls. In the Pender portion, county convenience centers take household trash and recycling only, and state law keeps yard waste out of landfills, so tree debris has to be hauled privately or handled on site. Check with the Town of Surf City and your county about local rules, including any coastal permitting near dunes or marsh.
Storms and salt
Topsail Island sits squarely in hurricane country. On the mainland nearby during Hurricane Florence, the National Weather Service recorded a 92 mph gust at the Hampstead EMS/Fire station. Island trees grow in sandy soil with salt spray and wind, so they often have short, lopsided crowns and shallow roots. Laurel wilt has also been confirmed in both Pender and Onslow counties, and it kills redbay, a laurel-family tree common in coastal woods.
What we do on Topsail
- Removing storm-damaged pines and oaks from tight lots
- Taking out trees that crowd raised homes and walkways
- Clearing redbays killed by laurel wilt, keeping the wood on site as advised
- Palm removal and frond cleanup
- Stump grinding before new landscaping
Seasonal scheduling
Summer traffic and rental turnover make island work harder from late spring through early fall. If your tree job isn't urgent, the off-season is usually easier for everyone: fewer cars, easier parking and no renters to work around. For rental owners, we can schedule around your booking calendar and finish before the next guests arrive.

Surf City Questions
Can you bring a crane onto Topsail Island?
When a crane is the safest option, the fixed bridge makes access possible without waiting for a swing span. Street width and lot layout still decide whether a crane fits, and we'll check that during the estimate.
Which county rules apply to my lot?
It depends on where your lot falls; Surf City is split between Pender and Onslow counties. Your tax bill shows which. Town rules apply on both sides.
My redbay died suddenly. What should I do?
It may be laurel wilt. Keep the wood on your property instead of hauling it off, since moving it spreads the beetle. It can be left, chipped on site, or burned with a permit.
When is the best time for tree work on the island?
Unless it's urgent, the off-season. Traffic and parking are easier, and rental owners can avoid booking conflicts.
Do you remove palms on Topsail Island?
Yes. Palm removal is usually straightforward, but trunks are heavy and fibrous, so the work is planned for safe lowering and hauling. We also trim dead fronds and seed stalks from palms you want to keep.
