Trees on a Narrow Barrier Island

Tree Removal in Carolina Beach usually happens on lots that leave very little room. The town covers the north end of Pleasure Island, which it shares with Kure Beach, from Freeman Park down to Alabama Avenue, on roughly 2.45 square miles of land. Houses are close, many are raised, and the trees that survive here, mostly live oaks, pines and palms, grow bent away from the ocean wind. Taking one down is a matter of careful rigging and planning where every piece will go.

A town that has argued about its oaks

In 2021 a large live oak on a small Ocean Boulevard lot next to the beach was cut down to make room for a three-story duplex, even though more than 1,500 people had signed a petition to save it. At that time the town had no general tree-removal ordinance; its rules covered only certain cases, such as buffers along property lines for most non-residential uses. The episode pushed council to ask for a draft tree ordinance. Rules can change, so before any significant removal we suggest a quick call to the town's planning staff, and we will tell you what we know.

Getting rid of the wood

The town's own yard waste program is free once a month in each zone, for up to about a pickup truck load. Branches have to be in 4-foot bundles with no limb over 6 inches thick, leaves go in paper bags, and each bundle or bag has to weigh under 50 pounds. Yard waste in plastic bags is billed as household debris at $40 a bag, and larger amounts are billed to your water and sewer account: $50 for less than a pickup load, $70 for a pickup load and $115 for a dump truck load. A whole tree is far more than the free limit, which is why our quotes include hauling unless you tell us otherwise.

Storm memory

Hurricane Hazel in 1954 reportedly destroyed 362 buildings here. During Florence in 2018, waves carved escarpments up to 10 feet high into the dunes at Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. Trees near the dune line live on sand with almost no organic layer, and once surge or overwash undercuts them they can tip without much warning. After any big blow, look at the soil around the base of your trees for cracks or a raised edge on one side.

What we do on the island

  • Removing storm-damaged oaks and pines from tight lots, lowered in sections
  • Clearing trees for additions, raised decks or driveways, once you know the town's current requirements
  • Palm removal and dead frond cleanup
  • Pruning to lift oak limbs off roofs and away from service lines
  • Stump grinding on sandy lots where the stump is the last thing in the way

Carolina Beach Notes

  • Monthly zone pickup. Free yard waste removal comes once a month per zone for up to about a pickup truck load; branches must be in 4-foot bundles with no limb over 6 inches thick and each bundle under 50 pounds.
  • Fees beyond the free load. Extra loads are billed to the water/sewer account: $50 for less than a pickup load, $70 for a pickup load, $115 for a dump truck load. Yard waste in plastic bags is charged as household debris at $40 per bag.
  • The 2021 oak petition. A large live oak on an Ocean Boulevard lot was cut for a duplex in 2021 despite a petition with more than 1,500 signatures; the town then had no general tree-removal ordinance and council asked for a draft.
  • Owner-occupied homes. Census QuickFacts lists an 84.4% owner-occupied housing rate and a median owner-occupied home value of $566,200 for 2020-2024, with 6,564 residents in the 2020 census.

Carolina Beach Questions

Can I put tree limbs out for the town's monthly pickup?

Yes, within limits: 4-foot bundles, no limb over 6 inches thick, under 50 pounds each, and free only up to about a pickup truck load per month. More than that is billed to your water and sewer account. Debris from a full tree removal is normally hauled by the tree crew.

Does Carolina Beach require a permit to remove a tree?

In 2021 the town had no general tree-removal ordinance, but council asked for a draft afterward, and buffer rules apply to some non-residential properties. Call town planning to check the current rules before a large removal.

Why do trees fall so easily here after storms?

Island trees root in loose sand, and surge or heavy rain can wash out or soften the soil around them. A tree that grew sheltered by a neighboring house can also catch wind differently once that cover changes. Leaning trunks and lifted soil are the warning signs.
